Insurance & Coverage Overview

Insurance & Coverage Overview

The Alumni Association’s insurance coverage is provided to chartered regional clubs and affiliate groups, subject to certain limits and exclusions.

Any claim or incident that could arise in a claim should be reported directly to the Alumni Association immediately. If an injury does occur, you must never admit liability or promise restitution. Report the matter to the Alumni Association Business Office via [email protected]. If pressed by a potential claimant, simply say you are reporting it to the Business Office which will send it to the Alumni Association’s insurers who will handle the issue.

 Liability Coverage

Events are generally considered Alumni Association events held by club and affiliate volunteers; therefore, these events are covered by the Association’s insurance for bodily injury and property damage (to others).

Board members are additional insureds solely with respect to their liability for performing activities on behalf of the club/ affiliate or the Alumni Association. The Association maintains insurance coverage to pay on behalf of the directors and officers for wrongful acts in the administration of the club/ affiliate’s affairs (i.e., while acting within the scope of their duties, which should be defined in writing). Wrongful acts are generally defined as meaning any error, misstatement, misleading statement, act, omission, neglect, or breach of duty committed, or attempted by a director or officer, or any matter claimed against a director or officer solely by reason of serving in such a capacity.

In order to ensure the clubs and affiliates are covered by the Alumni Association’s policies, all must use the Association’s event registration system to promote and secure registrations for all events. However, certain types of events are not covered leaving club/volunteers potentially on the hook for personal liability from injuries.

Examples of Events Not Covered:

• Events where alcohol consumption is the primary activity (such as bar/pub crawls). The Alumni Association strongly discourages these activities.

• Events held in non-public spaces. For any in-home events, it is suggested that the homeowner purchase a one-time policy at his/her own expense.

• Strenuous and risky events (e.g., hiking, intramural sports, bike rides, saddle animals, challenge courses, skiing, rock climbing, trampolines, fireworks, parachuting). The Alumni Association strongly recommends that clubs notify participants that no coverage exists for these types of events and request they sign and return a Participant Waiver & Release Agreement (available in the toolkit) in advance of participating.

• Events involving a boat over 50 feet. Please contact the Alumni Association if you are considering an event on a boat.

Bank Accounts

Losses from bank accounts held outside of U-M are not covered by the Alumni Association’s liability coverage.
