Volunteer Code of Conduct
As club and affiliate volunteer leaders of the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan, all volunteers are expected to safeguard and uphold the interests and reputation of the Alumni Association and the University of Michigan, to conduct themselves in a professional and respectful manner while executing their club and affiliate duties and to maintain the highest standards of ethical conduct.
Alumni Association Club and Affiliate Volunteers agree to:
- Act in the best interest of the Alumni Association in accordance with all Alumni Association policies and procedures
- Support the Mission, Vision, Programs, and Services of the Alumni Association
- Be responsible stewards of personal and University data
- Serve as responsible fiduciary stewards of the Alumni Association and the University of Michigan assets, resources, property, and reputation.
- Execute the role and responsibilities assigned to them with honesty, competence, and fairness.
- Refrain from using their volunteer position for personal, political, or financial gain.
- Refrain from exercising individual authority and/or undue influence over any other individual or group associated with the university or within the community.
- Comply with all international, federal, state, and local laws and regulations, as well as the bylaws of their club/affiliate and the bylaws and governance documents of the Alumni Association.
- Treat all other volunteers, alums, university staff, and fans in a responsible, professional, and respectful manner and avoid inflammatory or slanderous language and/or discriminatory or harassing behavior toward any of these constituents.
- Contribute to an environment of collaboration and partnership during all board, committee, and volunteer discussions, contributing to appropriate and constructive dialog and communication.
- Uphold a collaborative spirit and work in partnership with the Alumni Association and its staff.
- Refrain from undermining positions, policies, or decisions approved by the club, affiliate, or association.
- Use all modes of communication, including but not limited to, email, social media and the press, in a responsible and respectful manner.
- Agree to uphold the bylaws of the club or affiliate and honor the terms of office and election process outlined within the group’s bylaws.

Transfer power in a peaceful and supportive manner after elections take place.
Any violation of the Code of Conduct should be shared with the Alumni Association for review. These reports can be made by emailing [email protected]. Violations will be reviewed by an internal board at the Alumni Association, and a staff member from the Global Engagement Team will follow up with the individual reporting the violation within 5 business days with the steps to be taken to address the infraction. In severe cases, the Alumni Association reserves the right to remove the volunteer leader from their position and bar them from future participation in club and/or affiliate activities.
